Convention Report

The Willamette Coin Club/Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association fall show was a success for the 9th consecutive year at the Lloyd Center DoubleTree Hotel in Portland. In addition to an active bourse and collector exhibits, there was the first Larry Rowe symposium with eight speakers on Thursday, Oct. 3, and the ANA Road Show exhibit featuring a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. (Rowe, a longtime active numismatist, chaired the 1990 ANA anniversary convention in Seattle.)

Convention Dates/Times:

  • Dealer/exhibitor set up and Early Bird entry: (subject to change)
    Friday, October 4, 3:00 - 6:00 PM.
    Saturday, October 5, 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM.

  • Public show hours:
    Saturday, October 5, 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
    Sunday, October 6, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Thursday (October 3) First Annual Larry Rowe Symposium

The symposium is now over - The WCC plans to do it again in the future.

  • Doug Mudd - The Politics of Coinage: Messages and Their Importance on Early Modern Coinage.
  • David Snow - The Richmond Island Coin Hoard.
  • Paul Berkman - A North Africa $1.00 Short Snorter.
  • Larry Gaye - What is Arab-Byzantine Coinage?
  • Jason Failla - Intro to Ancient Coin Collecting...and Investing.
  • Scott Loos - An Introduction to Medieval Bracteates.
  • Jerry Bobbe - How to Use Logic and Mathematics to Successfully Buy Certified Coins, or the Idiot's Guide to Winning at Grading.
  • James Reinders - Sharing Your Numismatic Knowledge by Exhibiting, Competitively or Not, Sharing is Fun! Ideas, Tips, and Techniques Shared by an Award-Winning Exhibitor.

Other convention information:

  • Approximately 90 local, regional and national coin dealer tables. See the 2013 dealer list.

  • Located adjacent to Lloyd Center Mall and just a few blocks from the Oregon Convention Center.

  • Admission $2.00 per day. Children under 12 are free.

  • "Early Bird" admission available for a fee.

  • As usual, the show was in a room connected to the hotel's parking garage, immediately across the street from the main hotel entrance.

  • There was an expanded collector exhibit area on one side of the room near the entrance. Eric Holcomb (PNNA chief judge) was available to consult. We're pleased to report that competitive exhibit awards were reinstated for the 2010-2013 shows, and were continued. See the exhibit award winners for 2013.

  • There was the popular Young Numismatist (YN) treasure hunt. (See details below.)

  • Boy and Girl Scout programs See scouting page.

  • Hourly door prizes!

Young Numismatist/Family Programs

In addition to Boy and Girl Scout clinics, there was also a general public and youth and family activities table inside the show (sometimes known as the "WCC-PNNA Kid's Educational Zone") which provided youth, families and non-collectors with all sorts of FREE hobby introduction information and educational materials. Plans also called for a FREE 10-stop youth Numismatic TREASURE HUNT, for both Saturday and Sunday.

The next PNNA/WCC fall convention is scheduled for October 10-12, 2014 in Portland, OR.
