PNNA Spring Convention Report - 2015

The biggest annual coin show in the Pacific Northwest, sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association (PNNA) and now in its 15th year in Tukwila, was once again a big success, with strong attendance despite generally nice weather conditions. Total three-day paid attendance was approximately 1,000 as usual. See the convention program with dealer list (PDF file).

In addition to bourse activity, there were exhibits, awards, numismatic theater and club meetings on Saturday, and a popular Young Numismatists (YN) program.

  • Some of the speakers and award winners are pictured below.

  • Juniors on the bourse floor were excited to have the opportunity to complete a set of numismatic items as part of the Young Numismatist (YN) "Treasure Hunt" game. Participation was strong on Saturday, with the program once again conducted this year by ANA President Walt Ostromecki.

  • A Boy Scout workshop was offered by James Reinders, but there were no "takers" this year.

  • There were 12 collector exhibits this year in 32 cases, the best turnout in years! One of the exhibits was actually the PNNA convention memorabilia exhibit maintained by Del Cushing.

  • There were souvenir elongated coins with a new design (as shown), and you could make your own with the PNNA’s “penny press.”

  • A PNNA 75th anniversary party was held on Saturday May 2 after the close of the bourse, and 75th anniversary medals were available for sale, with sales off to a great start!

  • See the 3rd Q 2015 edition of The Nor'wester for board and general membership meeting minutes.

Special thanks to Kevin Charboneau for serving as general chairman for the 2015 convention. This was Kevin's second convention as chairman, and he did a nice job once again.

The PNNA is pleased to announce that the association's annual convention will again be held at the Tukwila Community Center, April 22-24, 2016 (new dates due to conflict with Central States convention).

The PNNA 75th anniversary chocolate cake! (Yes, it was good, and a few pieces were left over for Tukwila Community Center staff.) PNNA President and 75th anniversary party master of ceremonies Danny Bisgaard. There weren't too many correct answers to Danny's trivia questions about American life in 1940!
Ed Fischer (left), PNNA Director and 75th anniversary/medals chair, received the Bob Everett Memorial Award from PNNA president and award committee chairman Danny Bisgaard (right). Dennis Reed (left) accepted the PNNA's literary award for best club newsletter on behalf of the Olympia Coin Club. Presenting the award is PNNA President Danny Bisgaard (right).
This year's keynote speaker was Mike Zagorin, speaking about (and displaying) "Viking Coins." The 75th anniversary party speaker was Del Cushing (right), who spoke about certain aspects of PNNA history, including the two major exhibit awards. Del is shown here receiving a donated 1990 Seattle ANA exhibit medal (for the PNNA collection) from PNNA Director Gawain O'Connor (left).

PNNA 2015 Spring Convention Photos (ANA Awards)

Gawain O'Connor (left), PNNA Director and longtime volunteer and collector exhibitor (among other activities) received an ANA Presidential Award from ANA President Walt Ostromecki (right). Just so you don't think Walt Ostromecki was only giving awards, here Walt (right) receives an honorary PNNA life membership from PNNA past president Lisa Loos (left)! During the 75-year history of the PNNA, only 33 people have been honored in this way. (Walt was the 32nd, and sculptor Thomas D. Rogers was the 33rd.)
John Brown (left), PNNA Director and active Salem Numismatic Society member, received an ANA "Point of Numismatic Light" award from ANA President Walt Ostromecki (right). James Free (left), also a PNNA Director and active Salem Numismatic Society member, received an ANA "Point of Numismatic Light" award from ANA President Walt Ostromecki (right). Walt is making two of these awards for each of the 50 states, and John and James are the recipients from Oregon.
Tony Kalt (right), PNNA Director, active Boeing Employees Coin Club member and collector exhibitor, received an ANA "Point of Numismatic Light" award from ANA President Walt Ostromecki (left). Bill McKivor (left), longtime PNNA Director and British token and medal dealer (among other activities), received an ANA "Point of Numismatic Light" award from ANA President Walt Ostromecki (right). Tony and Bill are the two recipients of this award from Washington.
The PNNA receives a Presidential Certificate of Recognition for its 75th anniversary from ANA President Ostromecki (right). Accepting are PNNA President Danny Bisgaard (left) and VP James Reinders (center). Host Committee members for the March 2015 ANA National Money Show in Portland received certificates of appreciation from the ANA and PNNA presidential awards from general chairman Danny Bisgaard.
