President's Message 2013
by PNNA President Danny Bisgaard

4th Quarter 2013

Please continue to support your local coin clubs and coin shows. They are the lifeblood of the hobby and your expertise continues to motivate the YNs that are thirsty for your knowledge.

Speaking of support, consider contacting your Congressional delegation in supporting the World War I American Veterans Centennial Commemorative Coin Act. The Act will pay tribute to the end of World War I and require the minting of 350,000 silver dollars in the year 2018, which marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice with Germany that ended the war.

By the time you get this newsletter the Puyallup Fair will be over. A great big thank you to Rick Schulz for organizing all the volunteers to staff the shifts and to all the volunteers that took time out of their busy schedules to entertain all the fair-goers that visited the booth. The penny pressing machine continues to be a great hit! Thank you to the dealers that have donated items for the PNNA display. Those donations received to date were on display in Puyallup and will be displayed in Portland.

Another round of thanks to Larry Gaye and all the WCC club members that have volunteered for the Portland Show (October 5-6 at the Lloyd Center DoubleTree Hotel). There is still time to help; contact Larry at lgaius.larry@gmail.com. Educational opportunities will be held on October 3, also at the DoubleTree, and attendance is free. Read more in the newsletter – thanks to Scott and Larry for coordinating the great agenda. Please RSVP to Larry Gaye.

Thank you to all the members that took time to fill out the survey. Please read the summary of results. Your board will use this information to continue improving the benefits of the PNNA. Congratulations to Ron Engolm from Salem who won the top prize of $100 – he chose to share his winnings at the Salem Coin Club meeting on Sept. 3 – he gave $5 to each Salem club member as a match to the dues in becoming a member of the PNNA – thanks, Ron! About 13 new members including a family signed up that night.

As the Board gets ready to meet this fall, we continue to need the memberships’ help. Contact Ed Fischer about the redesign of the PNNA logo and medal designs for the upcoming 75th PNNA anniversary in 2015. In addition, Ed is chairing the medal design committee for the ANA convention (National Money Show) in Portland, March 3-7, 2015. His email address is edoregon@comcast.net. Please contact me (d.bisgaard@comcast.net) if you are willing to serve on the various committees that are needed to make this show a success. Please consider serving on the PNNA Board; new elections will be held in 2014.

Speaking of Northwest honors, the ANA made awards to the following members of the PNNA at the ANA anniversary convention in Chicago this August:

  • Larry Gaye – ANA Medal of Merit
  • Katie Reinders – ANA YN of the Year
  • James Reinders – ANA Outstanding Adult Advisor
  • Joe Boling – ANA Exemplary Service Award
  • Dick Doty – ANA Lifetime Achievement Award (posthumously)

Congratulations to all. By the way, the Reinders team also won some top exhibit prizes at the convention!

Have a great numismatic fall – consider attending the Tri-City Coin Club show in Richland, WA (Oct. 19-20); Everett Coin Club show in Everett, WA (Nov. 16-17); North Shore Num. Society show in Vancouver, BC (Nov. 17) or the Salem Coin Club show in Salem, OR (Dec. 6-7). Hope to see many of you this fall in Portland.

3rd Quarter 2013

As I write this quarter’s column, the weather is great in Salem – 82 degrees! Please continue to support your local coin clubs. They are the lifeblood of the hobby and your expertise continues to motivate the YNs that are thirsty for your knowledge.

Speaking of summer, the planning is already underway for the Puyallup Fair and our exhibit in the Hobby Hall. Dates of the Fair are September 6-22. Volunteers are needed to staff the exhibit – please contact Rick Schulz by e-mail, richardf53@yahoo.com, or by phone, 253-535-0690. The penny pressing machine will be at the Fair. I encourage every local member to volunteer – it is a great way to give back to the organization. Admission to the Fair is free to those that do volunteer. As the Board gets ready to meet this summer, we continue to need the memberships’ help: Fill out the interest survey by July 31 for a chance at the drawing of cold cash. Contact Larry Gaye, lgaius.larry@gmail.com, to help at the Portland Show – October 5-6 at the Lloyd Center Doubletree Hotel. Contact Ed Fischer, edoregon@comcast.net, about the redesign of the PNNA logo and medal designs for the upcoming PNNA 75th anniversary in 2015. Please consider serving on the Board; new elections will be held in 2014.

As we continue to mention, the Northwest has been honored by the awarding of the ANA National Money Show in Portland, Oregon, March 3-7, 2015. Please contact us if you are willing to serve on the various committees that are needed to make this show a success. In addition, if you have ideas for the PNNA medal, you might want to consider a design that will befit the ANA convention as well, since both activities are taking place in 2015.

Have a great “numismatic” summer – consider attending the Northwest Token and Medal Society Annual Convention at the Clackamas Oregon Banquet Center, July 13-14 (contact Mike Patton), or the ANA World’s Fair of Money show in Chicago, August 13-17. (Please see www.worldsfairofmoney.com for more information.) Hope to see many of you this summer.

2nd Quarter 2013

A big thank you goes to Mike Labosier and his team for organizing the PNNA annual convention April 12-14 at the Tukwila Community Center. In addition, Scott Loos deserves our thanks for his leadership in organizing the bourse dealers. I encourage every member to attend the board meeting Saturday at 8:00 a.m. and the general membership meeting that evening at 6:15 p.m. We will continue the format of an open Q & A forum. We as a Board want to hear from our members.

The annual awards presentations will be made at the membership meeting. Come out and give your support to this year’s winners.

As the Board gets ready to meet at the Tukwila Show, we continue to need the memberships’ help:

Contact Mike Labosier about volunteer opportunities for the PNNA convention in Tukwila, April 2014. Your participation takes some of the workload off the Convention Committee.

Contact Ed Fischer about the redesign of the PNNA logo and medal designs for the upcoming 75th PNNA anniversary in 2015. (email edoregon@comcast.net)

Please consider serving on the Board; new elections will be held in 2014.

As mentioned in last quarter’s newsletter, the Northwest has been honored by the awarding of the ANA National Money Show in Portland, Oregon, March 3-7, 2015. Please contact us if you are willing to serve on the various committees that are needed to make this show a success. More information will be forthcoming on the needs. In addition, if you have ideas for the PNNA medal, you might want to consider a design that will befit the ANA convention as well, since both activities are taking place in 2015.

Have a great “numismatic” spring – consider attending the ANA National Money Show in New Orleans, May 9-11, 2013 or the ANA World’s Fair of Money in Chicago, August 13-17, 2013. Hope to see many of you in Tukwila.

1st Quarter 2013

Hope all of you had a joyous holiday season. I think all of us are looking forward to the year 2013. A big thank you goes to Gene Wiley, Larry Gaye and Scott Loos for organizing the Portland, Oregon PNNA/WCC annual convention. All of the team of volunteers made the show a success. Exhibit award winners are posted on the PNNA website.

We continue to appreciate the work James Reinders does in promoting exhibits. We were blessed to have seven adult and two YN exhibits at the annual Salem, Oregon show held Dec. 1-2 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Gold and silver were awarded to the various winners. Business was brisk and I think the dealers had a good show, in spite of the new date for the show.

As the Board gets ready to meet at the Boeing Show, we continue to need the memberships’ help:

Contact Mike Labosier about volunteer opportunities for the PNNA convention in Tukwila, April 12-14, 2013. Your participation takes some of the workload off the Convention Committee.

Contact Ed Fischer about the redesign of the PNNA logo and medal designs for the upcoming 75th PNNA anniversary in 2015 (edoregon@comcast.net).

Please consider serving on the Board, new elections will be held in 2014.

Finally, the Northwest community has been honored by the awarding of the ANA National Money Show in Portland, Oregon, March 5-7, 2015. Please contact us if you are willing to serve on the various committees that are needed to make this show a success. More information will be forthcoming on the needs. In addition, if you have ideas for the PNNA medal you might want to consider a design that will befit the ANA convention as well since both activities are taking place in 2015.

The 1st Q 2013 newsletter has articles on the various awards we present. Please take the time to read and submit nominations for consideration.

Have a great “numismatic” winter – consider attending the FUN Show in Florida, Jan. 10-13 or the Boeing Show in Kent, Wash., Jan. 19-20 or the ANA National Money Show in New Orleans, May 9-11.

Let us make 2013 the best year ever in numismatic collecting!
