News from the Atlanta ANA show

As reported by PNNA member and ANA national volunteer Larry Gaye.

The annual ANA National Money Show™ was held Feb 27-Mar 1, 2014, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Its official, Larry and Kathy Rowe were selected by the ANA Board as Honorary Chairs of the National Money Show in Portland, 2015.

Also, Katie Reinders was selected for the upcoming vacancy as the new ANA Intern. This puts her on the ANA Board of Governors for her six-month term. Her buddy Cole’s term is ending. Quite an honor.

The ANA Saturday “free” spectacular at the Atlanta Show appears to have been a raging success. Saturday featured a “Free Appraisal” booth in the afternoon. If memory serves it ran from noon till 3 p.m. People lined up all day and kept four or so appraisers busy till the end. There were still many folk in line when it had to be cut off. Three 1889-CC Morgans were brought in and a very rare Austrian set was brought in. One of the Austrian items in the set had a catalog value of some $15,000. I saw one of the CC’s and it was a real EF and amazingly escaped from cleaning. This is a very valuable coin as uncleaned specimens are very rare.

The other freebee was no entry admission was charged on Saturday. There was buzz on the floor all day Saturday till the bitter end. It actually prevented us from breaking down booths till around 3 p.m. or so as there were too many attendees in the aisles. (We normally start at around 1 p.m.)

The exhibition of the California buried treasure find by Don Kagin was an amazing draw as well. These three events were very pivotal and provided for a very good show.

ANA is already implementing free Saturday admission for the 2015 Portland show. Another perk for ANA members is that they are allowed into the show a half-hour before the general public.

2014 PNNA Elections

TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE PNNA: (by election chairman Bill McKivor)

It is time once again to pick those who would lead us for the next two years. We are looking for a few great people to serve as officers and on the board of directors.

Please consider service to the club, if you have time, it is more than worthwhile. You get to know many people in the numismatic community and get to meet collectors of nearly every possible phase of coin, token, and medal collecting, and help guide the PNNA to bigger and better things. The term of office is 2014-2016.

Thus, we are looking for nominees. If you would like to run for any of the offices, President, Vice President, Treasurer, or Secretary — or for the board of directors — please contact me.

We need to have a slate of candidates by the first of March, an election soon after, and the results will be announced at the PNNA Convention in Tukwila on May 3rd.

If you are a member of the board and have not contacted me with an OK to run again, please do, as I cannot enter anyone’s name without permission. And if you are a person just now thinking about helping the PNNA with your hands and your heart, I shall happily sign you up to run.

The 3rd Quarter 2013 edition of the PNNA’s newsletter, The Nor’wester, has been published and can be accessed as a PDF file on the back issues page.

If you are a PNNA member, you should have received a cover sheet with The Nor’wester, including a member survey. The first 100 members to respond with a completed survey by the deadline will be entered into a prize drawing. If you’re not currently a PNNA member, it’s too late for the survey this year, but we might do it again in 2014.

This is another great year for the PNNA, with the usual conventions in Tukwila (completed) and Portland (scheduled for October 5-6), plus other activities including a booth at the Puyallup Fair Hobby Hall (September 6-22). If you’re at the Fair, stop by and say hello!

Thank you again for your interest in the PNNA, and I look forward to seeing you in Portland.

Free members:
As a reminder, to continue your free PNNA membership (if applicable), you need to attend this year’s spring or fall convention and fill out a new free membership form. Starting August 1, there will be a modest dues increase for those who prefer to receive their newsletter in paper form. (Yes, mailing is getting more expensive.)

Paid members:
If you already have a paid membership, thank you for your support of the PNNA! Please check your newsletter cover letter and renew now if necessary.

Sincerely,
Eric Holcomb
